Two typewritten essays by Hazeltine, secretary of the Chautauqua Society of History and Natural Science: "Slavery in Chautauqua County, N.Y.," and "The Recent Finding of a French Bayonet in the Swamp through which flows the Outlet of Chautauqua Lake, corroborates the historical account of the Expedition of Capt. DeCeleron in 1749," written in 1913.

Born at Montreal, December 29, 1693; entered military service, 1713; was sent to Mackinac 1734-40; was sent to Detroit as commandant, 1742-1753; but was in the meantime several times at Quebec and Montreal; commanded at Niagara; was sent by Galissoniere, governor of Canada, to take possession of the Ohio River Valley for France, 1749; removed from Detroit and appointed Major at Montreal, 1753; died there, April 14, 1759.
